Most "acne actives" force you to choose: clear the breakout or protect the barrier. Azelaic acid is one of the few that does not make you pick a side — and that is precisely why dermatologists keep recommending it.

What azelaic acid actually does

Azelaic acid is a dicarboxylic acid naturally produced by Malassezia yeast on skin. It works on three fronts at once, which is unusual for a single molecule:

  1. Antibacterial — reduces C. acnes populations in the follicle.
  2. Anti-keratinising — normalises the abnormal shedding that plugs pores.
  3. Tyrosinase inhibition — fades post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), the dark marks acne leaves behind.

Add a genuine anti-inflammatory effect and you get the reason it is a first-line option for rosacea as well as acne. Unlike retinoids, it is generally considered compatible with pregnancy — always a clinician's call, but it removes a common objection.

This is the single most misunderstood point for brands. In the United States, 15% and 20% azelaic acid are FDA-approved drugs. You cannot launch them as a cosmetic under MoCRA — a cosmetic product making a drug claim is a mislabelled drug. In the EU, azelaic acid is permitted in cosmetics, but your claims must be substantiated in the Product Information File under Regulation 1223/2009 and notified through CPNP.

The formulation problem nobody warns you about

Azelaic acid has poor water solubility and a tendency to recrystallise. That is why so many 10% products feel grainy or pill under sunscreen. Your factory brief must address:

  • Delivery system — suspension, liposomal, or a solubilised derivative (potassium azeloyl diglycinate is gentler but is not equivalent to free azelaic acid at 10%).
  • pH window — around 4.5–5.5 keeps it stable and skin-friendly.
  • Texture — silicone or ester-based glide to defeat the grittiness.
  • Stability testing — 3-month accelerated at 40°C, plus a freeze-thaw cycle.

Briefing your manufacturer

Ask a private label cosmetics manufacturer for: the delivery system used, the actual free-acid percentage (not the trade-name raw material percentage), stability data, an in-use grittiness assessment, and the safety assessment file. A 10% claim backed by 2% free acid in a derivative is legal but misleading — and your customers will notice within a month.

Realistic entry: MOQ 1,000–3,000 units, sampling 7–15 days, production 30–45 days.
