The Ordinary called it. Drunk Elephant built a hero product around it. Now US and EU indie brands are asking their OEM partners one question: "Can you formulate with bakuchiol?"
What is Bakuchiol?
Bakuchiol (pronounced ba-koo-chee-ol) is a meroterpene extracted from the seeds of Psoralea corylifolia, a plant long used in Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese medicine. Chemically it is not related to vitamin A โ yet in 2018 a study in the British Journal of Dermatology showed that 0.5% bakuchiol delivered comparable wrinkle-reduction and pigmentation benefits to 0.5% retinol, with significantly less irritation.
For the North American and European market, that single finding reframed bakuchiol as the clean-beauty answer to retinol.
Why US & EU Buyers Love It
Formulation Playbook for OEM/ODM
- Effective range: 0.5%โ1% (EU CPNP and US MoCRA both accept this band)
- Pairings that win: bakuchiol + niacinamide (barrier + brightening), bakuchiol + peptides (collagen synergy), bakuchiol + Centella (calming)
- Texture: lightweight serum or gel-cream; vacuum pump or amber glass to protect the active
- MOQ: most China OEM factories offer 500โ1,000 pcs for a custom bakuchiol serum
- Sampling: 7โ15 days; mass production 30โ45 days
Honest boundary: bakuchiol is not "stronger than retinol." For maximum anti-aging on tolerant skin, prescription retinoids remain the evidence gold standard. Bakuchiol's value is access โ it lets the 60% of users who can't tolerate retinol finally get results.
