'Clean' is now a compliance layer, not a vibe

In 2026 'clean beauty' is no longer just a trend — it is a regulatory and commercial reality shaped by federal law, retailer standards and informed consumers. A vague 'clean' claim is a liability; what opens shelf space is passing each gatekeeper's restricted-substance list.

Retailer clean lists are the real access test

• Sephora Clean + Planet Positive: free from 50+ ingredient categories (SLS/SLES, parabens, formaldehyde donors, phthalates, mineral oil) and adds sustainable-sourcing and packaging commitments.
• Whole Foods Premium Body Care: restricts 100+ categories with rigorous sourcing criteria.
• Credo's 'Dirty List' goes further still, restricting 2,700+ ingredients and extending into sourcing and packaging.

Each list updates periodically, so what was compliant last year may not be this year — build 'clean' in from the start.

The federal baseline: MoCRA

MoCRA is the U.S. floor: facility registration (renewed biennially), product listing, serious-adverse-event reporting within 15 business days (records kept 6 years), GMP aligned to ISO 22716, and safety substantiation for every product. On top of that, eight U.S. states had enacted class-wide PFAS bans by early 2026, each written against specific CAS numbers and effective dates.

What converts

Transparency is the differentiator. Publishing a full ingredient glossary — what each ingredient does, where it comes from, why it was chosen — builds the purchase confidence that vague 'clean' language no longer does.
